Enjoy a Safe and Healthy Summer

Summer is finally here! It’s the season of family vacations, backyard barbecues, picnics in the park, days at the beach, gardening projects, and plenty of time spent outdoors. While summer is full of opportunities to make memories with family and friends, it’s also important to keep safety in mind.

A few simple precautions can help ensure that your summer is remembered for all the right reasons.

Beat the Heat

Drink water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Take breaks in the shade or indoors when possible and try to plan strenuous outdoor activities during the cooler morning or evening hours. Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing can also help your body stay cool.

Be aware of the signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating, and fatigue. If you or someone else begins experiencing these symptoms, move to a cooler location and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

Protect Your Skin

Sunshine may be one of the best parts of summer, but too much sun exposure can be harmful.

Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 before heading outdoors and remember to reapply every two hours or after swimming and sweating. Don’t forget areas that are easy to miss, such as your ears, neck, and feet.

A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing can provide additional protection from harmful UV rays.

Practice Food Safety at Picnics and Cookouts

Nothing says summer quite like a picnic or backyard barbecue. Unfortunately, warm weather can create ideal conditions for harmful bacteria to grow.

Keep cold foods cold by storing them in insulated coolers with plenty of ice. Perishable foods should not remain unrefrigerated for more than two hours—or one hour if temperatures exceed 90 degrees.

When grilling, use separate utensils and plates for raw and cooked meats to prevent cross-contamination. Always cook meats to safe internal temperatures and wash your hands frequently when preparing food.

Stay Safe Around Water

Swimming pools, lakes, rivers, and beaches offer welcome relief from the summer heat, but water safety should always come first.Kids on floats in pool

Never leave children unattended near water, even for a moment. Designate a responsible adult as a “water watcher” during gatherings and avoid distractions such as phones or conversations while supervising swimmers.

Life jackets should be worn when boating, fishing, or participating in water sports. Learning basic swimming and water safety skills can help prevent accidents and save lives.

Watch Out for Insects and Wildlife

Spending time outdoors often means sharing space with mosquitoes, ticks, and other wildlife.

Use insect repellents according to label directions and wear long sleeves and pants when spending time in wooded or grassy areas. Check yourself, children, and pets for ticks after outdoor activities.

It’s also important to respect wildlife by observing animals from a distance and avoiding contact whenever possible.

Travel Safely

Summer travel means busier roads and increased traffic. Whether you’re taking a long vacation or a short-day trip, make safety a priority.

Wear your seatbelt, avoid distracted driving, and never drive while impaired. Make sure children are properly secured in age-appropriate car seats or booster seats.

Before heading out on a road trip, check your vehicle’s tires, fluids, and battery to help prevent unexpected breakdowns.

Summer and grilling go hand in hand. To prevent accidents, place grills away from homes, decks, and other flammable materials. Never leave a grill unattended and keep children and pets at a safe distance.

Having a fire extinguisher nearby is also a good idea whenever cooking outdoors.

Summer is meant to be enjoyed. By taking a few extra precautions, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your friends while making the most of everything the season has to offer.
