Did you know that youth who participate in organized group activities often develop a stronger sense of belonging, greater confidence, and leadership skills that can positively influence their future?
I can personally attest to that. Recently, I was looking back through some old photos, and I found a few that made me smile.
The first photo shows me as a child getting the chance to sit behind the desk of a member of the Florida House of Representatives. Another was taken during my teenage years when I had the opportunity to meet the Speaker of the House from what would eventually become my home county. At the time, they were simply memorable experiences for a young person interested in learning more about how communities work.
The final photo was taken recently during the Brevard County Agricultural Tour, which I organized as the UF/IFAS Extension Agent serving the same community. In this photo, I am standing with the same former state representative, who now serves as one of our county commissioners, bringing the story full circle.
Looking back, I had no idea that years later I would be serving this community through UF/IFAS Extension and working with youth, agricultural producers, and families across the county.
One thing I’ve learned is that you don’t always recognize the moments that are shaping your future when you’re living them. What seems like a simple experience today may become part of the story that guides your path tomorrow.
While I wasn’t directly involved in 4-H as a youth, many of the opportunities I experienced reflect the same principles that make 4-H so impactful. Through involvement in community activities, leadership experiences, and exposure to local leaders and career paths, young people gain valuable skills and discover new possibilities for their future.
Here in Brevard County, 4-H provides those same opportunities by connecting youth with hands-on learning, agriculture, public speaking, citizenship, leadership development, and community service. These experiences help young people build confidence, develop life skills, and become engaged members of their communities.
Early exposure to community leaders, agriculture, and civic engagement can leave a lasting impression. While we may never know which experience will have the greatest impact, every opportunity to learn, lead, and serve has the potential to shape a young person’s future.
You never know which experience, mentor, or opportunity will inspire the next generation of leaders.
