Celebrate National Bingo Birthday Month—with a Healthy Twist!

Did you know the game of Bingo dates all the way back to the 1500s? Today, it’s still a favorite because it’s simple, social, and fun. You grab your card, listen for the numbers, and when you land five in a row, you get that moment everyone loves: shouting BINGO! But what does any of this have to do with your health? More than you might think. Everyone wants to be a winner, and in this case, the grand prize is better health and a better you.

Most of us already know we need to eat more fruits and vegetables, but variety is the real game-changer. Different colors and types of produce offer various nutrients, and mixing them up helps your body in numerous ways. So why not use Bingo as a fun way to motivate yourself? Making your own card is incredibly easy—and this time, instead of numbers, fill your squares with healthy habits. Try things like “eat a new fruit,” “eat a new vegetable,” “try an exotic fruit,” “eat something purple,” “eat a root veggie,” “try a new bean,” or “make a smoothie.” These are just ideas—feel free to get creative!

Once you complete five in a row, reward yourself with a small treat or a feel-good activity. If you fill the whole board, celebrate with something fun that doesn’t have to cost a dime—maybe a bike ride, a day at the park, or a quiet hour to relax with your favorite hobby. The real prize, of course, is how you’ll feel as you add more color and variety to your meals. And remember, it doesn’t have to stop with fruits and vegetables—you can add exercise squares too, like “take a 10-minute walk,” “stretch for five minutes,” or “dance to your favorite song.”
