UF Peanut Butter Challenge

Launched in 2012 in Florida’s Panhandle region as a way to raise awareness of peanut farming in the area, the challenge has grown into a friendly competition to help fight hunger in our state. UF/IFAS Extension offices in counties across the state invite people to donate jars of peanut butter, with the office collecting the most crowned as champion and the peanut butter donated to local organizations to distribute to those in need. This year’s challenge runs Sept. 30 to Oct. 31.

Why peanut butter? Well, it’s nutrient dense which means it packs a lot of nutrients for the amount of calories. It’s shelf stable, so it will hold in a pantry or cupboard. And, of course, it’s loved by many (though, the debate over crunchy versus creamy rolls on).

And, many children and their families go hungry each day. So, spread the word: the challenge is simple, and the outcomes far reaching.

Please stop by your local Extension office to drop off unopened, unexpired jars of peanut butter. You’ll find a collection box will be in the lobby. Or, look to donate when you attend an Extension class or event, bring a jar along to donate. In Sarasota County, visit the Extension office in Twin Lakes Park, 6700 Clark Road.
