Whether expanding a farming or ranch operation, preparing for tax season or applying for a loan, producers need strategic financial planning to keep the business productive, profitable and sustainable. Today’s agribusiness operators must be well-versed in a range of financial skills.
To support these efforts, the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), in partnership with Texas A&M University and Agricultural Finance, Tax and Asset Protection, will host “Business Planning and Tax Management for Farmers and Ranchers” on Aug. 26 at UF/IFAS Extension Miami-Dade County.
This free, in-person event is open to farmers, ranchers and agribusiness professionals seeking tools to improve business practices, access U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) loans and meet important financial training requirements needed for federal loans. Registration is required.

Cost: Free, with lunch included.
Participants will gain practical knowledge in how to:
- Create a solid business plan with clear strategies.
- Manage financial records and statements.
- Utilize asset protection techniques.
- Navigate USDA loan programs, including the Farm Service Agency’s Farm Loan Program.
Participation in this workshop also satisfies the USDA FSA financial training required for current borrowers.
The workshop will be conducted in English, with Spanish-language support provided by Texas A&M for attendees with limited English proficiency and to assist with applications.
“Farmers, ranchers and other agribusiness professionals can enhance the profitability of their businesses and reduce risk through proper financial planning,” said Derek Farnsworth, associate professor of agribusiness management in the UF/IFAS Food and Resource Economics Department. “Attendees will acquire essential financial management skills and receive help applying for farm loans by attending the workshop.”
In addition to classroom-style instruction, attendees can receive one-on-one guidance from experts and assistance completing applications for USDA FSA loans. These loans are often essential for starting, expanding or maintaining family farming operations.
