The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Plant Nutrient Oversight Committee (PNOC) is considering a proposal to sanction the first-ever nutrient management recommendations for hemp production in Florida. The evidence-based guidelines are the product of several years of research by scientists in the UF/IFAS Industrial Hemp Program. The hemp provisional nutrient management recommendations are now open for public comments through Oct. 16.

Dr. Zack Brym, assistant professor in the UF/IFAS agronomy department, led the research team. He said the fertilization recommendations are advisory in nature with ongoing development and review of the science. The goal is the efficient use of fertilizer viable crop production and quality while limiting environmental impact.

“Growers should consider UF/IFAS recommendations in the context of their entire management strategy aiming to increase production, biodiversity and resilience,” said Brym, an agroecologist. “This includes practices that benefit soil health through retention of organic matter, plant nutrients and living organisms.”
