Sun Safety Matters

Broward Family and Consumer Sciences recently educated approximately 250 individuals on sun safety at a large community event. We collaborated with Dr. Melissa Vilaro, UF/IFAS Extension, Health and Wellness, Extension State Specialist, who provided us with timely and valuable sun safety information for all citizens to be aware of as we head into the summer months.

Get your daily dose of Vitamin D from the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) exposure and vitamin D production are dependent on many factors. Latitude, season, skin color, and sun protection determine UV absorption and vitamin D production. Always follow the advice of your healthcare provider. • Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.
• One in every five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. If skin cancer is detected early and treated early, there is a 99.9% survival rate.
• Exposure to UV rays from sunlight is the most common cause of skin cancer.
• UV rays from the sun can damage your skin and cell DNA.
• Getting sunburned five times can more than double your risk of getting skin cancer.

 

• If left untreated skin cancer can spread to vital organs becoming fatal.
