Don’t Be Crummy: Prevent Pest Infestations (Get a FREE Crumb Cleaner!)

Ants transporting various foods in a lineAnts afoot in your kitchen?

Perhaps a cockroach or two crawling across your garage?

Or…egad, a rat rifling around your pantry?

Well, while these experiences may happen to the best of us on occasion, they are certainly less than welcome.

The good news is that there are some easy actions we can take before we call it quits and call up the professionals.

Cockroach surrounded by shelter (crack), water (droplet), and food (crumbs)Before we go any further, it’s important to establish some context about what attracts pests to a space. Simply put, pests require three conditions to inhabit a space such as your home: water, shelter, and food.

If all three are present, then you are more likely to encounter an infestation. You can remove water sources by fixing leaks and decreasing indoor humidity through the use of tools, like dehumidifiers, and adequate ventilation. You can reduce shelter by sealing up gaps, cracks, or crevices, and investigating the home for other possible hiding spots, such as cardboard boxes. Which leaves us with food…

There are the obvious steps, such as keeping ripe fruit in the fridge instead of on the counter, but what about the tiny, easy-to-miss food sources? This is where crumbs come into play.
