Recycling for New Residents: A Guide to Sustainable Practices in Sarasota County

Welcome to the “Sarasota County Starter Kit: A Guide to Living on the Suncoast” series! As a new resident, you might have questions on the recycling programs in Sarasota County.  Moving to a new community often comes with changes in recycling, as programs can (and do) vary greatly from different regions of the county. So, understanding what items are acceptable in Sarasota County will ensure you are participating correctly.

We all have heard a neighbor or friend say, “I don’t recycle. It all ends up in the trash anyway.” While some recycled material does end up in our landfills, there are ways to ensure this is minimized. Sarasota County has a single-stream curbside recycling program.  This can lead to some confusion of the correct items and how the materials are sorted by the processors.  There are pros to single-stream recycling such as increased recycling materials and diversion rates.   However, there are cons including potential for increased contamination, if not done correctly. In this UF/IFAS webinar, residents will gain an understanding of the pros and cons of single-stream recycling programs and what items are accepted in your curbside bins.
