National Hurricane Preparedness Week runs May 5-11. So, let’s take this time to begin preparing for our annual hurricane season, which runs June 1 through Nov. 30.

For many of us, preparing for a weather event can be time consuming and overwhelming. We can help.

A great way to get ready is to break down your “to do” list into manageable segments. That way, you can tackle smaller chunks without feeling overwhelmed.

  1. Create your disaster plan.
  2. Prepare your supply kit.
  3. Set a plan for your pets.
  4. Build a plan for your business (if needed).

To help you begin your preparations, check out our “Disaster Preparedness” page at tiny.cc/ufsaraext_disasterprep.  The page is devoted to helping you get prepared for hurricanes (and other natural disasters), and includes easy-to-read factsheets on what should be included in your supply kit, how to handle your food supply, preparing for pets, sheltering, and more. Plus, we’ve included external links (like the flood maps maintained by Sarasota County) for still more information.

Want more information? Try Sarasota County’s disaster readiness web content or the American Red Cross.

And, of course, there’s great information in my disaster-readiness blog posts and webinars/video shorts and in our free “Disaster Preparedness” classes.

No matter the resource you use, just take some time to begin preparing. It’s never too early.
