2022 Sustainable Communities Workshop video contest for youth

Youth ages 8-17 are invited to enter the Sustainable Communities Workshop Youth Video Contest for a chance to win $100 or other prizes! The winners will be announced during the 17th Annual Sustainable Communities Workshop on Nov. 01.

Task                                         

Create a video explaining: If you were in charge of the world, what actions would you take to improve the health of our planet?

Rules

  • Contestants must live in Sarasota, Manatee, or Charlotte County.
  • There will be one winner per age group (age as of Sept. 1, 2022):
    • 8 – 10 years old;
    • 11 – 13; and
    • 14 – 17.
  • Only one video submission per person or group (you can enter as a team).
  • Video must be no more than 2 minutes.
  • Video must be original content and work of the youth. Do not use copyrighted sounds or music in your submission.
  • Video must address the stated task (above).
  • Be creative.

Video Judging

  • Content (20 points):
    • Did the contestant describe what a healthy planet means to them?
    • Did the video show/explain specific personal actions that could improve our planet’s health?
    • Video is no more than 2 minutes.
  • Technical Quality (10 points):
    • Lighting: Can the subject(s) be seen? Is it (or, are they) in a well-lit area?
    • Sound: Can the speaker(s) be heard? Is there excessive background noise?
    • Video Quality: Is the video stable (not shaky)?
    • Editing: If used, are transitions smooth? Are speakers cut off in mid-speech?
  • Creativity (20 points):
    • Did the youth present an innovative use of videography, editing, materials and/or ideas?

All submissions are due by Oct. 05.

*UPDATE* Due to the impacts of hurricane Ian, the deadline has been extended to Oct. 17. If you already submitted a video and would like to make changes, re-submission is allowed until Oct. 17.

A parent/guardian must submit the video on behalf of the youth participant. The online submission form (above) includes a consent statement.

Prize

The winner of each age group will receive a *$100 gift card. All participants receive a certificate, a free ticket to the Sustainable Communities Workshop, and a reusable straw.

Sustainable Communities Workshop

Participants of the Youth Video Contest receive free admission to this year’s Sustainable Communities Workshop, an annual event that brings community members together around sustainability. Residents, businesses, students, and others gather to learn from knowledgeable speakers and panel discussions. Registrants are welcome to attend in-person at the New College Harry Sudakoff Conference Center or participate virtually. Student tickets and financial assistance to attend are available.
