Hurricane Recovery: Extended Tax Deadline and Resources

Florida taxpayers and business owners residing in a county affected by recent hurricanes who filed an extension to complete their 2023 tax return (that is the return due April 15, 2024) have been granted more time to file the return. The new tax filing deadline is May 1, 2025. In addition, some penalties have been postponed. Find complete information on this IRS web page

The annual tax filing deadline applies to people who owe taxes. Filing an extension allows a filer to avoid the failure-to-file penalty. However, it does not eliminate penalties and interest for money owed.

Tax filers who are owed a refund have up to 3 years to file and collect their refund. These filers will not pay a penalty for filing late and may receive some interest on their refund. That interest will be considered taxable income.

The IRS has additional disaster relief resources about recovering essential records, taxability of disaster payments (usually tax free) and disaster loss deductions.
