Who is the Farm to School, Farm to Community Team?
The Farm to School, Farm to Community team is part of the UF/IFAS Extension Family Nutrition Program (FNP). The team works to make Florida grown foods more accessible to SNAP-eligible people in Florida.
The Farm to School and Community team interacts with local partners as well as state and federal agencies to improve the health of Florida citizens while benefiting farmers and the local economy.
Examples of their work:
In March, Food Systems Coordinator Christina Walmer facilitated a Farmers’ Market Symposium in Escambia County. The event brought together UF/IFAS Extension, representatives from Florida Organic Growers, and the Florida Department of Agriculture. Participants learned about different programs that can be incorporated into a farmers’ market, best practices, and various marketing opportunities. The symposium received excellent feedback from participants.
In Alachua County, coordinator Kelly Korman facilitated communication between Alachua County Public Schools and Beli Farms. Korman ensured that the constraints and flexibility of each party was made clear. Through this communication Beli Farms was able to sell 200 lbs of Florida cucumbers to Alachua County Public Schools.
This team is excited to build relationships between growers and their communities to improve the nutrition of Florida citizens and the health of our state’s food system.
