Native Orchids Available-Encyclia tampensis
The varieties of orchids used on any given installation will vary depending on availability and suitability for the site. The Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society has available for residential orchid installations the following species:
- Encyclia tampensis
Encyclia tampensis (ET) orchid is a tree orchid (epiphyte) native to Florida and the Bahamas. It is the most frequently found native orchid in Broward County. There are still colonies in many cities and county parks. They thrive in the canopies and branches of hardwood hammocks and swamp areas, and dry pine forests.
Their natural habitat is on the top surfaces of horizontal branches, typically higher in the canopy with good airflow access.
The following videos will cover Site Requirements, Installation & Care of Encyclia tampensis.

Florida- Friendly Landscaping in South Florida.
The Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) program operates under the UF/IFAS Center for Landscape Conservation & Ecology (CLCE). The Florida Friendly Landscaping program is an educational outreach program. The program informs homeowners and professionals how they can be more environmentally friendly with their landscape care practices. The Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program’s mission is to educate Floridians about science-based, environmentally friendly landscaping practices. It encourages them to conserve and protect our water resources by applying its nine principles. Recognizing the home landscape as part of a more extensive natural system will help us make sound decisions in creating Florida-Friendly yards. It helps protect Florida’s natural environment for future generations.
