How to Volunteer in 4-H. The Kids Need YOU!

Volunteers play a crucial role in the 4-H program. If you’re interested in helping with Brevard County 4-H (or anywhere), here’s how to get started.

Learn About 4-H

First, it’s important to learn about 4-H. Understand its mission and what the program involves by visiting the 4-H website, which provides information on how you can volunteer and what is required.

Contact Your Local Extension Office

Next, contact your local Extension office by using the 4-H website to locate their contact details. Reach out to them via phone or email to express your interest and get specific information on how to apply.

Once you’ve been contacted, you’ll need to complete the application process. This involves filling out an application form with your basic information and interests. A background check is also required to ensure the safety of all participants. Depending on your area, you might have to attend an interview to discuss your interests and experience.

Attend Orientation and Training

Once you are approved, you will need to attend orientation and training. Orientation will introduce you to 4-H’s rules and how the program operates. Depending on your volunteer role, additional training, such as learning about working with children and safety protocols, may be necessary.

Start Volunteering

Once everything is in place, you can start volunteering. You’ll be assigned a role that matches your skills, such as leading a club or helping at events. This is your opportunity to work with kids and other volunteers, supporting the community and making a difference.

Ongoing Development

To keep growing in your role, take advantage of ongoing training opportunities and stay connected with your Extension office. Participate in meetings and events to remain engaged.
