UTIA Graduate Teaching Assistant

Graduate Teaching Assistant/M.S. Opportunity in Equine Extension with
Nutritional Management Focus

The Equine Extension program led by Dr. Jennie Ivey and housed in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Tennessee, conducts research, teaching, and extension projects centered on developing and implementing science-based practices to increase stakeholder knowledge on various management areas. Specifically, the Ivey lab focuses on applied nutrition concepts and their impact on equine welfare, well-being, and athletic performance. Research supervised by Dr. Ivey may include on farm projects, surveys, economic and population data, and retrospective data analysis on topics relevant to the industry today.

Students in the Ivey lab will participate in a multidisciplinary program that integrates extension,
teaching, and applied research in the areas of nutrition, welfare, and exercise physiology in horses andother equids. Students under Dr. Ivey’s mentorship are provided the opportunity to learn modern
approaches to equine-centered projects, data collection, to interact and learn from collaborating
labs/programs across campus and at other programs throughout the U.S., to present their research at
national meetings, and to develop skills of interest. This M.S. student position also provides full
tuition, a competitive stipend, and Graduate Student benefits. In turn, students are expected to work collaboratively and independently, to develop their research into submitted scientific manuscripts, develop extension publications, and to contribute to the collective efforts of the department and equine extension program. A variety of degree backgrounds should provide a sufficient foundation for entering into this M.S. program, but a strong knowledge base in animal science, with coursework in nutrition/biochemistry and functional knowledge of the equine industry is preferred.

Interested applicants should submit a brief letter describing the basis for their interest, along with a
curriculum vitae, copies of undergraduate transcripts and GRE scores, and contact information for
three references to: Dr. Jennie Ivey, Assistant Professor, Department of Animal Science, using the email address jzivey@utk.edu. Applicants may also reach Dr. Ivey by e- mail or phone (865-974-3157) with any questions, if necessary. Review of interested applicants will begin immediately, and will continue until a suitable student is found.
