Summary
This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Livestock Behavior Research Unit, located in West Lafayette, IN.
Responsibilities
This position will support a Research Animal Scientist conducting research on thermal stress in swine, cattle, and poultry.
The incumbent performs technical duties in support of research projects on the effects of stress on livestock and poultry. Research will focus on developing alternatives to standard agricultural practices using the scientific fields of physiology, immunology and ethology (behavior).

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Performing on-farm duties specific to the research including liaison with farm managers about experimental requirements; setting up of video equipment; coordinating technical help; collecting biological data from farm animals and recording data.
- Maintaining, calibrating and modifying equipment and automated systems used for research and analysis procedures for behavioral and physiologic studies, including digital video recorders, camcorders, heart rate monitors, body temperature monitors and thermal pads.
- Using standardized behavioral recording techniques and behavior software, including Noldus Observer.
- Conducting laboratory techniques including RIA, ELISAs, Histology, PCR, Flow Cytometry, or Western Blots.
- Keeping detailed records of experimental data.
