Let’s go on a TreeQuest!

Each year, on the third Friday in January, Sarasota County’s UF/IFAS Extension & Sustainability Dept. celebrates Florida’s State Arbor Day. Since 2018, the County’s urban forestry Extension program Treejuvenation Florida, has marked the occasion with an urban forestry scavenger hunt called TreeQuest. The scavenger hunt invites residents to go on a tree-appreciation journey in local parks and preserves, to learn first-hand the benefits trees provide to our communities, like cooler summers and cleaner water.

TreeQuest 2021 starts on Jan. 15. Residents will have two weeks within which to visit one of two participating locations, find the tagged trees, and submit clue answers online. Prizes include tree ID field guides and State park passes.

Residents can also send “selfies” they’ve taken with the trees they’ve discovered, and email them to sarasota@ifas.ufl.edu. UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County will share the photos on its Facebook page (@ufsarasotaext) to help spread the word about Florida Arbor Day and the benefits of community trees.

    • Hi Carol,
Some persons have visited more than one locations in past years and although visiting more than one location is not prohibited, only one clue submission is entered for the prize drawing.

  1. Hello. I would like to participate. Where do we find the clues? Thank you.

    • Hi Patty,
To participate in TreeQuest, visit any of this year’s locations: W. Blalock Park – Monty Andrews Arboretum or Twin Lakes Park, between Jan. 15 and Jan. 29, look for the tagged trees, and click on the clue submission form link posted in the blog to submit clue answers. The clue submission link will remain active for 2 weeks, and will be deactivated on Jan. 29, 2021.

      • You didn’t answer Patty’s good question. Am I correct to assume that the clue and answer are on the tree? Are the “tagged” trees obvious? As opposed to the signage describing the tree?

Sounds like a good outdoor event. Thanks for doing it.

        • Hello Marsha,
The clues and their answers are located on tree tags attached to the trees and not on any signage describing the trees. Hope you have fun!
