Rainwater harvesting has been around for thousands of years. The earliest evidence can be found on sites such as ancient Mesopotamia, around 3000 BC, where people collected rainwater for irrigation and domestic use. The Romans constructed elaborate aqueducts and cisterns, the ancient Greeks and Chinese, also implemented various methods for capturing and storing rainwater.
Throughout history, rainwater harvesting has adapted to various cultures and climates, proving to be a sustainable water management practice. Today, the popularity of utilizing rain barrels to capture runoff from roofs is making a comeback with urban and rural residents. Rainwater harvesting is a best management practice suggested by the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program. Always use a food grade container, as the plastic the barrels are made from can hold residue for years. Do not use any container that held chemicals. You can learn more about how to make a rain barrel and all the beneficial uses by attending our workshop December 14th at 9:30am at Taylor County Extension location, 203 Forest Park Dr., Perry, FL. They are available for purchase after attending the workshop. Master Gardeners have painted rain barrels with scenes that will fit in any landscape! Or, if you prefer, an unpainted barrel, either would make a great Christmas gift.
