Origins and Evolution

There is a popular legend that the name “Sarasota” is tied to the daughter of explorer Hernando de Soto. Early maps indicating Sarasota as de Soto’s landing site clash with inconsistencies in his family’s background, casting doubt on this theory. Yet, variants of “Sarasota” emerged on Spanish and British maps in the 1760s, firmly establishing the area’s name long before Florida became part of the United States in 1821. Sarasota’s incorporation in 1902 marked the beginning of its gradual development. Notably, Sarasota, including neighboring regions like Venice and Englewood, were part of Manatee County until 1920 due to an imbalance in representation favoring Bradenton’s control. Frustrated by this disparity, Sarasota’s residents advocated for autonomy, culminating in a pivotal moment when a referendum, held on June 15, 1921, resulted in the establishment of Sarasota County as an independent entity, emancipating the area from Manatee County’s oversight and marking a significant milestone in its history.
