Financial Literacy Basics: Teaching Youth to Budget and Save

Learning how to manage money is one of the most important skills you can develop as a young person. Financial literacy, understanding how to budget, save, and spend wisely, will help you make smart decisions with your money throughout life. In 4-H, you have the opportunity to participate

in projects that involve money management, whether you’re selling products, fundraising, or simply planning how to use your allowance. By learning to budget and save, you set the foundation for financial success in the future.

Budgeting is all about understanding how much money you have and deciding how to spend it wisely. A good budget helps you track your income (money coming in) and your expenses (money going out). By planning ahead, you can avoid running out of money and make sure you are saving for the things that matter most. Whether you are saving for a big purchase or for your future education, developing good financial habits now will give you the freedom to make choices later on without worrying about money.

Tips for Budgeting and Saving:

  1. Track Your Spending: Write down every time you spend money, no matter how small. This helps you see where your money is going and make adjustments if needed.
  2. Set a Savings Goal: Whether it is for a new phone, clothes, or a fun outing, having a specific goal will motivate you to save. Set aside a portion of your income each month to reach your goal faster.
  3. Create a Budget: List all your sources of income and all your expenses. Make sure your spending does not exceed your income and try to save at least 10% of what you earn.
  4. Avoid Impulse Purchases: Before buying something, ask yourself if it is something you really need or if it fits into your budget. Waiting a day before making a purchase can help prevent impulse buys.
  5. Start an Emergency Fund: Set aside money for unexpected expenses like repairs or emergencies. This allows you to be ready for the unexpected while keeping your other financial goals on track.
