Celebrate World Snake Day with Naturally Florida

Celebrate World Snake Day with Naturally Florida

July 16 is World Snake Day!  Florida is home to an incredible diversity of native snakes—many of which play important roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Learning about snakes in Florida is a great way to understand the many ways we benefit from snakes as well.

Did you know?

Many snakes provide, all-natural, pesticide-free pest-control by eating rodents in and around residential areas?

As the Natural Resources and Conservation Extension Agent here in Polk County, I often hear questions (and concerns) about snakes. Whether you’re spotting them in your yard or on the trail, it’s easy to forget that most of Florida’s snakes are harmless—and many are helpful.

Celebrate World Snake Day with Naturally Florida episodes!

To celebrate World Snake Day, I’ve rounded up a few favorite episodes from Naturally Florida, the podcast I co-host, to help you learn more about our slithery neighbors:

Whether you’re curious, concerned, or just want to better understand the slithering neighbors in your backyard, these episodes are a great place to start:

  • Pentastomes in Paradise: Invasive Parasites Plaguing Native Snakes: Explore an unusual, but serious conservation issue impacting Florida’s native snakes. Listen now

On #WorldSnakeDay, we encourage a three-part proactive approach to living safely with snakes:
