2024 DeLuca Bioblitz: By The Numbers

Engaging the Community in Biodiversity Conservation

The 2024  DeLuca BioBlitz in Osceola County was nothing short of amazing, with an astounding 3,311 observations of 674 species by 43 observers.

The collaborative spirit of the event led to the re-discovery of 11 locations of the newly reclassified Florida Lupine (Lupinus floridanus), celebrating the critical role of public participation in scientific discovery. As we continue to learn about the range and existing populations of Florida lupine, we can devise new ways to protect and encourage the regeneration of this beautiful wildflower species.

Highlighting Biodiversity

Among the many findings were 21 butterfly species and about 16 threatened species, illuminating the rich biodiversity of the DuLuca Preserve.

Building a Conservation Legacy

The success of the annual BioBlitz event extends beyond the numbers. It represents a collective effort that brings together community members, scientists, and conservationists with a common goal: to protect and preserve the natural beauty and ecological diversity of Florida. The information collected during the DeLuca BioBlitz will serve as a foundation for future conservation efforts, helping to ensure that the natural habitats and the myriad species they support continue to thrive for generations to come.

Take Action for Conservation

We invite every community member to become a steward of our natural environment. From participating in local conservation initiatives to educating others about the importance of biodiversity, there are numerous ways to contribute.

In April 2024, UF/IFAS Extension Polk County’s Natural Resources and Conservation program is collaborating with The Nature Conservancy on the 2024 City Nature Challenge. For more information on getting involved, read our post, 2024 City Nature Challenge Polk County.
