Growers and reporters are invited to join faculty, scientists and students for the 2025 Field Day at UF/IFAS Everglades Research and Education Center, themed “Growing Together Toward Sustainability.” The day’s events will highlight the center’s dedication to the agricultural community, from growers to consumers, and underscores the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in building a sustainable future.
Since 1921, the UF/IFAS Everglades Research and Education Center (EREC) has served as a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture and natural resource protection in South Florida.
Located in the heart of the Everglades Agricultural Area, where growers produce vital and economically important crops including sugarcane, corn, rice, lettuce, celery, vegetables, microgreens and more, EREC has been instrumental in supporting both the agricultural industry and the environment.
Attendees will see firsthand the center’s century-long commitment of the faculty, scientists and students to advancing sustainable farming practices to ensure the future of our food supply and the protection of vital ecosystems.
The program includes tours of the facility’s labs and grounds and highlights of various research projects. Meet the team of scientists and students developing best-management practices research and extension programs conducted in collaboration with growers and the South Florida Water Management District.
The program begins at 8 a.m. with breakfast and opening remarks by Samira Daroub, EREC’s center director; Robert Gilbert, UF/IFAS Dean for Research and executive director for academic affairs and director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station. The keynote speaker will be Diego A Luzuriaga, vice president of research – Development at Florida Crystals Cooperation, focusing on sustainability research in the EAA.
“We look forward to hosting members of the community in south Florida to showcase the research, extension and education programs at the EREC. This will be a fun educational event for everyone interested in agriculture, sustainability, and education,” said Daroub.
