Cedar Key, Fla. — The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Nature Coast Biological Station (UF/IFAS NCBS) announced a new collaborative project aimed at strengthening storm preparedness and recovery in rural counties across North-Central Florida.

Rural communities often face limited capacity to respond to hurricanes and tropical storms. This initiative will provide direct support through preparation planning, recovery coordination, and assistance in securing grants to aid long-term resilience.
The project brings together a wide range of partners, including Florida Sea Grant, the UF/IFAS Department of Agricultural Education and Communication, and the UF/IFAS Center for Public Issues Education (PIE Center). It is also part of the Florida Emergency Disaster Education Network (FL EDEN).

To lead this effort, Heath Davis has joined UF/IFAS NCBS as special project coordinator. Davis, a 10-year former mayor of Cedar Key and past member of the Governing Board of the Suwannee River Water Management District, brings extensive experience in storm recovery and strong community connections across the Nature Coast.
In addition to community support, the program is planning to offer an annual internship program for University of Florida undergraduates, providing students with leadership training and hands-on experience in emergency response and civic collaboration.
“We are excited to launch this important initiative,” said Dr. Mike Allen, Director of UF IFAS NCBS. “By combining university expertise, student engagement, and community partnerships, we can help build stronger, more resilient rural communities.”
This project is just getting underway. Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to get involved. In the meantime, learn more about our partners and networks:
