New technology has been developed that every cattle producer should be aware of. Dr. Cliff Lamb and his Phd student, Darren Henry from the Beef Research Station will be providing demosntrations of new technolgies that can be used by ranchers to manage cattle reproduction. There have been advances made that make artifical insemination more feasible for commercial cattle herds. There have also been advances in tools for checking the pregnancy staus of cattle. Mack Glass has agreed to provide facilities and cattle from his ranch to demonstrate these new technologies.
For years the University of Florida has offered Cattle Reproduction Schools that provided participants the basic skills needed to palpate cattle for pregnacy. Even so, it was very challenging to get proficient at this skill. Within the last few years a new technology has emerged. Now there are commercial labs that can analyze 2 cc blood samples to determine pregnancy status. While the blood test cannot provide the depth of information that palpation can provide, it is something that cattle producers can be trained to do themselves. Everyone who attends the Cattle Reproduction Technology Demonstration will have the opportunity to learn the basic skills and information needed to pregancy test their own herd. Our goal is to provide enough cattle so that everyone who attends can actually practice drawing blood. While it is not complicated, there are techniques to learn to be successful.
This program is being provided at no cost to the participant. However, to ensure adequate cattle, supplies, and handout materials are prepared, we do need everyone who plans to attend to RSVP by Friday, October 10th.
