Spring Break 4-H Day Camps- Brochure and Registration Form

Teens who would like to volunteer to help with 4-H Day Camps should contact 4-H Agent, Ben Knowles.

County Camp at 4-H Camp Timpoochee
June 17-21, 2013

Camper Age: 8-12 (Campers must have turned 8 by September 1, 2012)
Cost: $220 for 4-H members, $230.00 for non-4-H members
Camper Registration Dates: TBA
First-time Camper Orientation: June 11, 2013 from 4:30 PM -5:15 PM at the Jackson County Extension Service.

Application Available for 4-H Camp Timpoochee Counselors and CIT

Counselors and Counselors-in-Training : 13-18 (Teen must have turned 13 by September 1, 2012 ). Teens must apply to serve as Counselors and CITs. Applications must be typed and are due April 5.

4-H Day at the Capitol
4-H Day at the Capitol is scheduled for March 14. 4-H Day at the Capitol is an exciting event which allows participants to learn about government through the, “Learning by Doing” approach that is fundamental to the 4-H Program. Participants attending this event will join other 4-H members and supporters, from across Florida, as they promote the 4-H and IFAS Extension Programs to government officials and the public, as well as take part in exciting tours and workshops that teach youth the importance of taking an active role in government!

Jackson County 4-H Science Fair
The 2013 Jackson County 4-H Science Fair is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, at the Jackson County Extension Service. Participation is open to all Jackson County 4-H Members. Rules and entry forms can be found at the Jackson County 4-H Science Fair webpage. Entry forms are due February 15!

To help 4-H members prepare for the Science Fair, several workshops will be offered at the Jackson County Extension Service. If you plan to attend a workshop, please contact the Jackson County Extension Service to sign up.

Workshops Scheduled: Each workshop starts at 3:30 PM and ends at 5:00 PM.

January 24 – This session will focus on helping youth brainstorm and come up with ideas for a science fair project. Youth will also participate in hands-on science activities that will teach them to think like scientists. Below are links to the Power Point presentations used during the workshops.

Recognition, With or Without an Award
Recognition is a very important part of life! People of all ages thrive on recognition of any kind. It makes them feel good about themselves and helps build self esteem. This doesn’t mean that every time someone does something GREAT that we throw a party and give them something. Recognition can be something as simple as saying, “Great Job today on your presentation. I could tell that topic meant a lot to you, and I really enjoyed it.” It can absolutely make someone’s day to here that they did a fantastic job.

Staying Healthy While Exercising in Cold Weather

Although we live in the Sunshine State, we still have to deal with a few days of cold weather. When it’s cold out, it can be hard for youth and their parents to get the 60 minutes of daily physical activity recommended by health officials. If families do venture out into the cold to exercise, it is crucial that family members dress appropriately to prevent too much heat loss. Jackson County Fed Cattle Show and Beef Judging Contest
The 2013 Jackson County Fed Cattle Show is scheduled for Tuesday, February 19. The Beef Judging Contest will be held Tuesday morning, before the Show. The contest is open to 4-H and FFA members from Jackson and surrounding counties. Registration will start at 8:30 AM and the contest will start at 9:30 AM. The Steer Show will start at 2:00 PM, followed by the Showmanship Contest. Award presentations and Buyer Registration will be at 6:30 PM and the Steer Sale will begin at 7:00 PM. Check-in for steers will be from 4-6:00 PM on Monday, February 18. Contact the Extension Service for more information.

February Meeting Location for 4-H Explorers
Due to scheduling conflicts at the Extension Service, the 4-H Explorers Club will meet on February 21, from 2:00-4:00 PM at Caverns Road Church of Christ. Call the Extension Service if you need directions. The March, April and May meetings will be at the Extension Service.

District Land Judging Contest to be Held in March
The Holmes Creek Soil and Water Conservation District would like to invite your 4-H Club to represent your School, your Town, and your County in the upcoming 2013 District Land Judging Contest.

WHO? All Vocational-Agriculture FFA Chapters and 4-H Clubs ages 14-18.
WHAT? Land/Soil Judging. Awards will be provided for Excellent Individual and Team performance. Food and Fun for all!
WHEN? Thursday – March 7, 2013, Registration at 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. – CST
WHERE? The Agricultural Center, 1169 East Hwy 90 Bonifay, Florida
HOW? Please RSVP as soon as possible to Margaret Crutchfield at the HCSWCD / Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) 547-2850 extension #3.

4-H Tropicana Public Speaking Program
Jackson County 4-H is very proud of the 4-H Tropicana Public Speaking Program. Working with youth in grades 4-6, this contest helps thousands of young people annually learn how to write and deliver a speech. The Jackson County 4-H Staff partner with school faculty each year to offer this program to local youth. Teachers are provided with 4-H curriculum to teach students the fundamentals of writing and delivering a public speech. Students then compete in a judged classroom speaking contest. Classroom winners compete at a school-wide competition. First place winners from each school and grade go on to compete at the County Contest. County Contest first place winners receive full camp scholarships to 4-H Camp Timpoochee. The Jackson County 4-H Count-level Contest will be Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at 6:00 PM, at the Jackson County Extension Service. Jackson County 4-H Seeks New Volunteers
The Jackson County 4-H Program is seeking new volunteers to help with county 4-H programs. Whether you have a couple of hours a month or a couple of hours a year to serve as a volunteer, Jackson County 4-H can find a place for you to serve. 4-H is a “learn-by doing” youth development program for children ages 5-18. 4-H provides young people with many different opportunities to develop life skills.

Master Gardener Plant Sale
The tentative date for the Jackson County Master Gardeners Plant Sale is March 23. It is possible that 4-H Clubs will be invited to participate in this event. Please put this date on your calendar. We will share more details when they become available.
