Chocolates, heart-shaped candy, giant stuffed teddy bears; with Valentine’s Day right around the corner we often think about the materialistic gifts that we can purchase for our significant other, but when was the last time you considered the investment into the quality of your relationship? One way to invest in your relationship is to think about the quality of your communication. There are so many environmental factors that come in to play when it comes to trying to communicate with our partners. School, work, children, finances, the world, etc.; all the bustling things around us that sometimes make it hard or tiresome to communicate with our partners.
According to a study done at the Brigham Young University (2013), learning “communication skills may be a potent point of intervention for couples who experience high levels of work–family conflict”. In addition, the way we communicate with our partners can vary across culture, ethnicity, demographic location, upbringing, etc., but the one this that remains true is that communication is directly linked to marital satisfaction. I’m not just talking about conversations here and there, I am talking about meaningful qualitative conversations that define our relationships. So why not invest some time reflecting on the quality and types of communication we have with our significant other?
