Free Tax Software and Education

Hillsborough County Extension is offering access to free tax software to residents whose adjusted gross income on their tax return doesn’t exceed $79,000. Adjusted gross income doesn’t include things like tax deductible contributions to retirement plans or tax-exempt contributions to Health Savings Accounts.

The free software can be used for 2023 tax returns. That is the return due this year on April 15, 2024. This robust tax software  is programmed to handle different types of income. It also features a  guide to help with tax credits and deductions. You can choose to file electronically (recommended) or print and mail.

Once you complete a short form at Hillsborough County Extension Free Tax Prep Link (qualtrics.com) and provide name, email, and zip code, you will be instantly emailed a link to the free (no bait & switch) software.

If you filed using our free link last year, complete the form to get this year’s link. You can then login with the previous year’s username and import your data.

If requested on the form, one-on-one educational assistance can be provided via web conference, telephone, or email. If you request an appointment, an IRS VITA certified Extension agent will reach out to you to schedule a session. Assistance is available on a first come first served basis.

Completing your own tax return can be an excellent way to take charge of your financial situation. It can help you analyze  your gross income, taxable income, and your tax rate. This information can help guide financial planning decisions– such as whether to contribute to Roth or Traditional retirement plans and the impact of using other tax advantaged vehicles.
