Educational poster about Anopheles mosquitoes

I am happy to share an Anopheles mosquito educational poster, co-authored by Irka Blosser. Knowing the biology of specific mosquito species can inform proper methods of reducing mosquito breeding in the environment and reduce mosquito biting. Different mosquito species transmit different types of pathogens. For example, mosquito species belong to Anopheles genus transmit malaria parasites. Whiles malaria-transmitting mosquitoes may lay eggs in roadside pools, the dengue-virus-transmitting mosquitoes may prefer to lay eggs in containers holding water. Understanding the biology and behavior of a specific mosquito species can reduce the pathogen movement between mosquitoes and people.

This educational poster have contents about the biology of  malaria transmitting mosquitoes in Zambia in southern Africa. Understanding the life cycle of mosquitoes can be translated into source reduction practices where Anopheles mosquitoes are likely to lay eggs. Malaria parasite transmission cycle and malaria symptoms will be informative to determine people to take appropriate medical care when suspected malaria symptoms are observed. Taking appropriate control measures such as indoor-residual spraying and use of insecticide-treated bednets can break the malaria transmission cycle and reduce the risk of getting sick from malaria. This poster is ideal for public outreach, STEM education events, or wall decorations.

Importance toward Public Health and Malaria Prevention

Understanding the biology of mosquitoes helps

  • to identify their presence,
  • prevent their population growth by limiting the number of mosquito larvae in waters near houses, and
  • take preventable measures to reduce mosquito bites.

It is important to drain or treat water with mosquito larvae. This source reduction practice prevent them to grow up and become adults seeking human blood. They are not only nuisance as pesky biters but can also transmit dangerous diseases like malaria. With practices like weekend check on your backyards to look for water holding mosquito larvae can significantly reduce mosquito breeding near your house.
