GIS students can compete for cash prizes in the GIS Day 2024 Map Contest

The winners of last year’s GIS Day Map Contest: Nithish Manikkavasagam of Florida Atlantic University (1st prize); Orlando A. Gonzalez of the University of Florida (2nd prize); and Giulliana Tiravanti Beoutis of Broward College (3rd prize).

Submissions are now open for students who wish to compete in the GIS Day 2024 Map Contest!

GIS Day, which will be held Thursday, November 21, 2024 at the University of Florida Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, is a valuable education and networking forum for college students interested in learning about geospatial science and career opportunities that exist within the field.

The event is hosted by the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society (FSMS) Miami Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Chapters; in partnership with the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) Florida Region and the UF/IFAS School of Forest, Fisheries, & Geomatics Sciences.

GIS Day 2024’s distinguished guest speaker is Gabrielle K. Drice, Information Systems Manager of the Resilient Environment Department, Urban Planning Division (GIS) in Broward County. She will be presenting on the topic “Creating a Strong, Dynamic, and Skilled GIS Team.” Audiences will learn about practices essential for assembling and nurturing a successful GIS team in any organization.

GIS Day will kick off at 6:15 p.m. with refreshments and a networking session, followed by the keynote speech. GIS Day Map Contest participants will then deliver 3-5 minute in-person presentations of their maps. The event will end at 8:30 p.m. after the awards presentation.

Map Contest: Entry, voting and prizes

The GIS Day Map Contest is an opportunity for GIS students to showcase their talents, compete for prize money, and gain valuable insights into the geomatics and surveying industry.

Submissions are open now. The deadline to submit is Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

To enter, please fill out this form. If your map file is MORE THAN 10 MB, please send your map title, description, school you attend, and file (or link) to geomatics-flrec@ifas.ufl.edu.

All contestants are required to deliver short (3-5 minute) presentations of their maps in-person at GIS Day. Following the presentations, members of the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society (FSMS) will vote on the best maps.

Awards will then be presented in person at the event. The top three winners will receive cash prizes: $800 for 1st place, $600 for 2nd place, and $400 for 3rd place. Contest participants can also enter to win one of five raffle prizes, each valued at $200.

Students may attend GIS Day without entering the Map Contest. To register, please RSVP by emailing geomatics-flrec@ifas.ufl.edu. Registration is free.
