CONGRATULATIONS BARRY JACKSON: 2023 GLEN HARRIS FLORIDA TREE FARM INSPECTOR OF THE YEAR

Our apologies for the late spotlight on this award. Barry Jackson is the District 6 representative for the Florida Tree Farm Program which covers Baker, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, Putnam, Union, and St John’s Counties. Barry is employed by Westrock and trains his fellow co-workers at the company as Tree Farm inspectors. He has played an integral role in getting some of our large-acreage Tree Farmers in line with the acreage limitations of the Program. He has been a tremendous asset to the Florida Tree Farm Program, especially the database manager. Barry is a consistent leader in completing assigned Tree Farm inspections and many renewals and updates each year. A huge thanks to Barry for all of his efforts to keep Florida’s Tree Farm Program strong and growing. He is most deserving of this annual award!

TAX TIPS FOR FOREST LANDOWNERS: 2023 TAX YEAR

Many forest management activities you conduct can have tax implications. Generally, all income received is taxable unless excluded by tax law, and nothing is deductible unless a provision allows it. Understanding the forest-related provisions and integrating tax planning into your forest management can help lower your tax. The annual tax tips publication, produced by the U.S. Forest Service and academic partners from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and The University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, is intended to be an informational and educational resource for you and your tax advisor, but is not intended as financial, tax, or legal advice. Please consult with your tax advisor concerning your particular tax situation. The information in the guide is current as of December 20, 2023.

NEW EXTENSION PUBLICATION: WHAT IF PRESCRIBED FIRE IS NOT AN OPTION?

Prescribed burning promotes healthy regeneration of vegetation, controls disease, and prevents wildfire. But what if prescribed burning isn’t a management option available to a landowner? SFFGS faculty member Michael Andreu, along with Christopher Kinslow and Stephen Enloe dove into the alternatives to prescribed fire and management treatments, from mechanical chopping to timber harvests to help landowners achieve their management goals. Check it out here: https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FR474

WEIGH IN ON CARBON MARKETS

A new survey “Exploring the Potential Effects of an Expanding Forest Carbon Market in the United States” seeks input on strengths, weaknesses, and anticipated outcomes from forest carbon markets, as well as insight into where additional information is needed to support informed decision making. The survey is open to anyone with insight and opinions into the effects of forest carbon markets on working forests and the communities that rely on them in the United States. Results from the survey will be analyzed anonymously and used with an aim of determining what is working well for forests and people, and what changes are needed to ensure all forest products, services, and values can continue to be available for current and future generations. The survey will take about 12 minutes to complete. Participate in the survey here.
