Is Florida Seafood Safe to Eat?

In the December issue of the Florida Aquaculture the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services posted an update article on this topic. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tests seafood harvested from the Gulf of Mexico. These tests indicate the Florida seafood is plentiful, safe, and have not been affected by the Deep Water Horizon oil spill.

Between 2010 and 2013 the department screened over 3000 samples of finfish and shellfish for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH’s) and the dispersant dioctylsulfosuccinate. All samples for both tests were well below the FDA’s requirements for safe seafood. Testing will continue and you can view summaries at http://www.FreshFromFlorida.com
