Valentine’s Day is coming up. Have you thought about how to make a meaningful, impactful impression on your loved one? Consider one of our free SMART Couples workshops. SMART Couples is an Extension initiative, launched in the fall of 2016, and consists of two adult relationship workshops: 1) Before You Tie the Knot for engaged couples and those thinking of marriage, and 2) ELEVATE: Take Your Relationship to the Next Level, for marriage and committed couples.
These workshops are conducted in a workshop format which includes a presentation, small group discussion and more private couple activities. Each person gets a workbook for their own use. The workshops are once a week in the evening for five weeks, at which everyone receives gift card incentives at the 2nd and 5th weeks as a thank you for participating. Further, a free meal is provided at each session. Classes are on-going, so we always have a workshop for you! And they are all over Jacksonville, including the Extension office.
When you take Before You Tie the Knot, you are eligible for a $25 discount on your marriage license at the Duval County Clerk of Courts and a waiver of the 3-day waiting period. We cover the topics of communication skills, conflict management, parenting, money management, healthy lifestyles, and your own individual needs. These topics fulfill the requirements of legislation established in 1999 as part of the Marriage Preparation Act.
ELEVATE integrates the physiology of love – how the chemistry of our emotions, positive and negative, affects our response to our partner. Further, participants learn to recognize stress triggers in themselves and their partner and how to interrupt negative cycles with more positive interactions. Participants discover how to strengthen trust and commitment, share more about themselves and their expectations in their relationship, gain value and respect from their partner, and build social supports that will uphold their relationship.
