Gators in Government: CALS students make their mark in the Tallahassee Internship Program

During Spring 2025, Laney Mulhollen and Erin Nadel turned their passion for public service into hands-on experience in Florida’s capital. Through internships in the Florida Senate, they learned how policy, communication, and collaboration shape the future of the state.

For Mulhollen, a forest, resources and conservation senior, this opportunity provided an up-close view of ideas becoming action. As a legislative intern, Mulhollen conducted research, met with constituents, and learned the intricacies of the appropriations process.

This experience allowed me to learn about and contribute firsthand to the legislative process, conducting legislative research, sitting in on meetings with constituents, and gaining valuable insight into the state appropriations process,” Mulhollen said.

Similarly, Nadel, an environmental science junior, spent her semester interning with Senator Lori Berman. Nadel’s responsibilities ranged from managing social media accounts and organizing legislative documents to tracking bills and amendments.

“This internship was a masterclass in people skills,” said Nadel. “I learned one of the most valuable abilities is connecting with others and being kind.”

Both students gained practical professional skills. Mulhollen and Nadel carry forward the lessons they learned in Tallahassee about policy, people, purpose and perseverance.

This internship has reaffirmed my passion for public service and working towards improving the lives of Floridians,” said Mulhollen. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to work alongside dedicated public servants over the past four months, and for the mentorship and guidance I received from Senator Brodeur and his staff.”

Both Mulhollen and Nadel show how experiential learning can transform classroom knowledge into real-world impact. During their Tallahassee Internship Program experiences, they deepened their understanding of the legislative process and strengthened their commitment to serving others. Experiences like this stand as examples of how CALS students are using classroom knowledge to make a real difference in Florida communities.

Mulhollen has turned this experience into a career, now working as a legislative aide in Tallahassee. Nadel is completing her senior year of studies in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences with plans to attend law school.
