Purpose and Rules
The purpose of the Holiday Bake-Off is to encourage adults and youth to work together on a project. This is not a traditional 4-H contest where a 4-H member must do all the work themselves. Mixes, precooked, and non-cooked items may be used in the finished product. Work should be done by the youth with supervision, directions, and help of an adult. Entries must have a festive holiday appearance. NO LIVE PLANT MATERIAL (SUCH AS HOLLY, POINSETTIA, BOXWOOD, ETC.) MAY BE USED! PRODUCT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.
A complete entry form must accompany your entry item. The Agent reserves the right to re-classify entry if needed and participants will be informed as soon as possible. One recipe for each entry must be submitted so that everyone may sample the product after the awards presentation. Please also keep in mind the following information:
- Only one entry per child per category.
- Entries must have a list of ingredients.
- Cloverbuds (age 5-7) will not be judged, but will receive a participation ribbon.
- Products will be judged on appearance, taste, and display.
- Awards in each category will be Blue, Red, or White
- Overall winner of each category receives a Golden Spoon.
- Overall winner of the Holiday Bake-Off receives the coveted Giant Golden Spoon.
Projects can be entered into any of the following categories:
- Decorated Cakes
- Gingerbread Cookies
- Brownies/Bar Cookies
- Specialty Items (i.e. Gingerbread Houses)
- Lite Recipes (for health conscious; uses less sugar, salt, and fat than traditional recipes)
Full rule document can be found here.
Once the audience has sampled the entries during the award ceremony, all leftovers will be donated to Love, Inc. All participants and audience members are also encouraged to bring toys that will be donated. This is to ensure that everyone gets some nourishment and love during the holiday as well has help Suwannee 4-H youth recognize one of the many simple ways to give back.
We will also be collecting toy donations for Toys for Tots. We ask that all youth entering a dish bring a donation. Please keep in mind that only new and unwrapped toys will be accepted.
There will also be an opportunity to support Suwannee County 4-H’s national meat judging team. This phenomenal group of young men and women will be traveling to Denver in January to represent Suwannee County and Florida at the Western National Roundup. To help raise the funds to get there, they will be offering chili for a suggested donation of $5 to help get a hearty meal on your stomach before chowing down on all the treats.
To help document the projects put together for the Holiday Bake-Off, Suwannee 4-H offers a record book that can be turned in later in Spring 2018. These record books help youth keep track of their project and give them an opportunity to attend the annual awards banquet.
