Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, colorless, tasteless, and radioactive gas produced from the radioactive decay of radium. As a Floridian, it’s important to be informed about radon because one in five Florida homes has elevated levels of this gas. And why does this matter? Radon is the single largest source of radiation exposure in the United States and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that it’s responsible for more than 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year, compared to 3,000 deaths annually from secondhand smoke. Consequently, the U.S. Surgeon General recommends all houses be tested for radon.
