Ready to Start a 4-H Club in Seminole County? Here’s How!

Thinking about joining 4-H in Seminole County with your family?

One of the best ways to get involved is to start your own 4-H club! The good news is you won’t have to do it alone. We’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Now’s the Perfect Time to Get Started

The 4-H year officially starts on September 1.  However, we love to connect youth and adults to the Seminole County 4-H program year-round.

What’s Required to Start a 4-H Club in Seminole County

To start a club, the Florida 4-H program requires:

  • Two Level-2 background screened volunteers who will serve as 4-H Club Leaders
  • Five youth (ages 5–18, as of September 1) from at least two families *
  • Offers one or more 4-H “projects”.  These learn-by-doing activities teach youth subject-matter, workforce skills, and life skills!
  • A plan for regular meetings.
    • Organizes a minimum of six club meetings annually, encompassing educational programs, recreational activities, and business discussions. Most 4-H clubs meet once a month from September to May.
  • A safe place to meet.
  • Youth officers or youth leaders provide leadership to the club.
  • Conducts at least one community service project.
  • Acts as a link to 4-H opportunities at the county, district, state, and national levels.

Design a Club That Works for You

In Seminole County, 4-H clubs come in many forms. Some are topic-specific—focusing on areas like: Agriculture & Animals, Nature & Environment, Horse, or Cooking.

Other clubs are more general, offering a little bit of everything and letting youth explore multiple projects over time. The choice is yours!

If you’re not sure what your club’s focus should be just yet, that’s okay. Many clubs start in one geographic area and then develop a topic focus as youth share their interests. The club can evolve along with its members.

What Happens at Club Meetings?

A successful club meeting typically follows this format:

25% Business – Club planning, reports, and decision-making (led by youth!)
50% Educational – Hands-on project work, guest speakers, skill-building activities
25% Recreation – Games, icebreakers, snacks, and fun

4-H uses project-based learning to spark curiosity and help youth develop important life skills, such as communication, problem-solving, leadership, and citizenship. With support from caring adult volunteers, members also experience a strong sense of belonging and purpose.
