Webinar Series: Florida Arbor Day Celebration

UF/IFAS Extension Polk County will host a series of webinars about urban forestry and urban trees in celebration of Florida Arbor Day, the week of January 11, 2021. They will focus on trees and tree canopy in Polk County’s residential and municipal areas, with a special focus on Winter Haven’s urban forestry program.

Participants will learn:
  • What an urban forest is
  • The benefits and challenges associated with managing urban tree canopy and residential trees
  • How to select a good tree for their landscape. Specifically, which trees will enhance both their yard and the community’s urban tree canopy
  • How their city can manage the community forest, using science-backed approaches

Each webinar will share information on a different aspect of urban forestry:
  • January 11, 12:15 – 1 PM: WATCH THE RECORDING (28 minutes)
“Trees and the Community: What is an urban forest and is it important to our community?” by Shannon Carnevale, UF/IFAS Extension Polk County’s Natural Resources and Conservation Extension Agent
  • January 13, 12:15 – 1 PM: WATCH THE RECORDING (29 minutes)
“Right Tree, Right Place: A resident’s guide to selecting the best tree for their yard” by Julie Schelb, UF/IFAS Extension Polk County’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program Coordinator
  • January 15, 12:15 – 1:30 P: (Panel Discussion) Because of the interactive nature of this webinar, a recording will not be published.
“Seeing the Forest through the Trees.” This panel discussion will focus on the City of Winter Haven’s efforts to jump-start a science-based approach to urban forest management in the City of Winter Haven. The panel will discuss challenges associated with an urban forest approach, compared to a single-tree management style, and opportunities for enhancing and protecting the current forest canopy.

This webinar is designed for adult learners, but the material should be okay for youth learners if a parent or guardian participates with them.
