Big news for Tampa Bay! A new $1.99 million grant will help create a plan to protect our communities from flooding and stronger storms. The plan is called the Tampa Bay Coastal Master Plan, and it will cover seven counties in the Tampa Bay region. Its goal is simple: keep people safe while also protecting nature.
Why This Matters
Flooding is already a big problem in our area. In fact:
- Many people live close to sea level
- Storms and heavy rain can cause serious flooding
- Even smaller storms can flood roads and neighborhoods
We can’t stop storms from happening—but we can be better prepared.
A Smart, Nature-Based Approach
Instead of only building seawalls or drains, this plan focuses on working with nature.
That means using things like:
- Wetlands that soak up floodwater
- Mangroves that protect shorelines
- Natural habitats that slow down waves
These “nature-based solutions” help reduce flooding while also supporting wildlife and improving water quality.
A Big Team Effort
More than 40 groups are working together on this plan, including:
- Local governments
- Scientists and universities
- Environmental organizations
- Community groups
They will study flood risks, find the most important areas to protect, and create projects that help both people and nature.
What Will the Plan Do?
Over the course of four years, the Coastal Master Plan will:
- Show where coastal and inland flooding is most likely to happen
- Identify the best places to invest in solutions
- Suggest projects to reduce flood risks
- Create tools to help people understand future flooding
