UF/IFAS Extension Is a Helping Hand To Ranchers

UF/IFAS Extension is said to be one of the best kept secrets in town, but we don’t want to be a secret. We want everyone to know we are here to help! One of the ways we can help is by providing new forages, research, and resources to ranchers. A partnership with Silver Spurs Riding Club and UF/IFAS Extension, a research demonstration site has been provided for applied research and educational field days for producers in Osceola County and surrounding counties. The demonstration site, located in Kenansville Florida is home to many different types of forages for producers to implement on their own property to maximize their herd’s nutritional needs and decrease their economic costs.

Some of the forages available are new cultivars of limpograss, UF Riata, stargrass, jiggs bermudagrass, perennial peanut, cool-season forages, and warm season forages. The new cultivars of limpograss are Gibtuck and KenHy which show excellent production and are better under grazing pressure than older varieties.

Educational field days are held every year at the demonstration site to showcase forage varieties, pasture management, hay production, best management practices, planting methods, and herbicide trials. These research based educational field days are based around the producer and livestock owners concerns and interests. Field days are taught by UF/IFAS Extension Agents, UF/IFAS Extension Specialist, and community partners. If you would like to attend an upcoming field day please contact UF/IFAS Extension Osceola County.

As the Livestock and Forages Extension Agent I am also here to help with your pastures, so if you have any questions or concerns I am happy to get my boots on the ground and come take a look. UF/IFAS Extension is always here to be a helping hand and resource to all local livestock owners and rancher in the community.
