Innovations in Agriculture is Theme of 2023 Farm City Week

The Manatee County Farm City Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the importance of relationships between farmers, consumers, community leaders and everyone in between who contributes to our safe, abundant food supply.

Farm City Week activities involve educational programming to build interdependence between rural and urban citizens. Look for  members of the Farm City Week committee around town at various commission meetings for Farm City Week proclamations.  For more information on events please click links or call numbers below or contact the Manatee County UF/IFAS Extension office at (941) 722-4524.

11/4-Bradenton Farmer’s Market: Farm City Week celebration, open 9 am-2 pm. 4-H and FFA students will be participating in activities.  https://www.realizebradenton.com/bradenton-market/

11/9- Farm City Week Agricultural Bus Tour: Planned stops include: Jones Green Bean Packing House, Sweet Bay Native Nursery, Wish Farms (strawberries), and Keen Family Hay Operation. Lunch at Dry Prairie Baptist Church. Cost $75 per participant which includes bus transportation, lunch, snacks and gratuity. 11/11-Veteran’s Day Parade: Parade begins at 9:30 am by the Fairgrounds on 13th Avenue W. , and ends with the  Veteran’s Day Memorial Service at Sutton and Lamb Parks at 11 am in Palmetto. Parade features a Farm City Week float with agricultural producers and committee members waving gracefully and handing pencils to the crowd! Additionally, The Palmetto Market will be taking place in Lamb Park from 9 am to 2 pm.

11/13Soil Speech Contest: For Grades 6 – 12 Sponsored by Manatee River Soil and Water Conservation District. Contestants must pre-register. Topic ‘May the Forest Be with You Always” To be conducted in the Kendrick Auditorium at Extension Service at 6 pm, contact Gail Somodi at 941-444-3142.

11/14-Kiwanis Luncheon: Celebrates Farm City Week and reveals the 2023 Agriculturalist of the Year. Dr. Nathan Boyd, UF/IFAS Gulf Coast Research and Education Center Associate Director and Professor of Horticulture,  will be the keynote speaker. Open only to Kiwanis members and Farm City Week Committee.

11/15-Leadership Manatee Agricultural Tour: Participants of the 2023 Leadership Manatee program visit local farms by bus. The group is greeted by a guest speaker or an agricultural panel to discuss hot topics in agriculture at lunch.

11/15 & 11/16-Ag Venture: Over 1,000 3rd graders visit the Mosaic Arena on the Manatee County Fairground to learn about agriculture through hands on experiences. Closed to public. Contact Alex Draper 941-722-4524 ext. 1844.

11/17Hall of Fame Luncheon: A luncheon is held at the Kendrick Auditorium at Manatee County Extension Service to recognize the 2023 Manatee County Agricultural Hall of Fame inductee. 11/18-Beef Workshop and Prospect Show: At the Mosaic Arena on the Manatee County Fairground, youth showing cattle in the county fair participate in hands-on workshops. After lunch, youth show their animals for judging. Open to public for viewing only. Contact Christa Kirby 941-722-4524 ext. 1824.
