Jackson County 4-H Meats Judging Team Shines Again

at State Meat Judging Competition

Once again Jackson County 4-H Livestock Club Leader Stacey Warden has managed to train yet another group of top-notch 4-H youth for competition in a State event. This past weekend, April 15-16, 2016, two teams comprised of intermediate and senior members, along with their parents and club leader, traveled to Gainesville to compete in the 2016 State Meat Judging Competition.

This undertaking is the result of hundreds of hours of practice and countless fundraising efforts that are necessary to have this kind of success. The Sr. Team of four members was the 3rd place team overall in judging and was comprised of members Anslie Yoder – who was the 2nd High Individual, Emma Caraway – who was the 6th High Individual, Caitlin Caudill – who was the 19th High Individual and Ashlynn Sistrunk – who was the 22nd High Individual.

The Intermediate Team of four members was 2nd place team overall in judging and 2nd high individual in retail identification and was comprised of members Hayden Warden – who was 3rd High Individual, Syler Griffin – who was 10th High Individual, Whitnie Yoder –who was 8th High Individual, and Dylan Ziglar – 15th High Individual

Participation in competitive events gives youth an opportunity to develop Mastery which is one of the eight essential elements of positive youth development. Mastery is building knowledge, skills, and attitudes and then demonstrating the competent use of this knowledge and skills by a proficient practitioner. The level of mastery depends on the developmental ability of the youth. The development of mastery is a process over time and preparation for and participation in the 4-H Meat Judging program is an excellent example of this process.
