Entries are now being accepted for the 2012 Southeast Hay Contest that concludes at the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie Georgia. Hay and Baleage samples will be evaluated for quality and ranked based on the Relative Forage Quality (RFQ) score. Even if you don’t think you have the very best hay, for $15 you will receive a protein, energy, and fiber analysis that is very helpful either for ration balancing or customer information. Enter for the information, and who knows, you may receive the bragging rights that come from recognition as one of the top hay producers in the Southeast.

Entry into the Southeast Hay contest is $15 per sample, and does require an entry form with a signature from your County Agent. Forage samples must come from fields with a minimum of 25 days of regrowth using a hay probe, by the farm where the forage was grown. Contest rules and entry forms are available at: http://www.georgiaforages.com. All entries must be received by the University of Georgia Forage Lab by close of business on Monday, September 24.

In addition to the regional contest, the Chamber of Commerce also has an award for hay producers. The Jackson County Hay Farmer of the Year will be recognized at the annual Farm City Breakfast. The county award is selected from the hay samples entered in the Southeast Hay Contest from Jackson County.
