Wagging Tails and Learning Trails: How to Start a 4-H Dog Club!

Hey there, fellow 4-H volunteers! Are you passionate about pups and eager to share that enthusiasm with local youth? Starting a 4-H dog club can be an enriching experience, offering kids the chance to learn about responsible pet ownership, training, and the amazing bond with a canine companion. Here’s a friendly guide to get you started on this exciting journey!

The first way in your club’s adventure is to connect with your local UF/IFAS Extension office. Ask to speak to your 4-H agent; they can offer help to find other interested youth in your area.

Don’t own a dog yet?

If you’re new to dog ownership or looking to expand your own knowledge before leading a club, consider attending some dog shows or rallies. This “learn by doing” approach is at the heart of 4-H, and it’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the world of dog sports and responsible handling. You’ll gain practical experience and network with other dog enthusiasts. AKC events can be found by visiting https://www.akc.org/sports/events/ .

Resources

Finally, a great resource for training opportunities and general dog knowledge is your local American Kennel Club (AKC). They often have programs, events, and certified trainers who can provide valuable insights and support as your club develops its training focus. Look for a local chapter in your area by visiting https://www.akc.org/clubs-delegates/clubs/about-clubs/ .

Starting a 4-H dog club is a wonderful way to empower youth and foster a love for animals. With a little planning and connection to these key resources, you’ll be well on your way to a successful and fun-filled club!
