Seeing the World with New Tech: 4-H Explores AI, Geomatics, and Beyond

Have you ever wondered how researchers truly understand the world around us? How do they identify species, map landscapes, and analyze environmental changes? Well, Hillsborough County 4-H is diving deep into the fascinating realm of technology used to explore our world, and we’re inviting you to join us!

We’re grateful to Katie Britt, UF/IFAS Assistant Director of Geomatics Extension, for her leadership in developing cutting-edge 4-H programming. Her expertise is opening up new avenues for our youth to investigate the world with “new eyes and new tech tools.”

What Technology Are We Talking About?

Imagine being able to identify any plant, animal, or object simply by pointing your phone. That’s the power of tools like Google Lens! In April, our youth will get hands-on experience using Google Lens to identify the diverse fish species at Carrollwood Village Recreation Center. This exciting project is a collaboration with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), UF/IFAS, and Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation, bringing real-world applications of technology to our local community.

We’re not just learning about the technology; we’re getting to see it in action! Participants will have the unique opportunity to observe researchers as they apply these tools in the field, gaining invaluable insights into their work.

Why is this important?

Real-World Application: Connecting classroom learning to practical, field-based activities.

Technology Literacy: Empowering youth with the skills to use modern tools for exploration and discovery.

Environmental Awareness: Fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for our natural environment.

Career Exploration: Providing a glimpse into the exciting world of research and geomatics.

Join Us!

Want to learn more about these exciting opportunities? Join Hillsborough County 4-H for their monthly Connections meeting:

Date: March 24th

Time: 6:30 PM

Location: Extension Office, 5339 CR 579, Seffner

Let’s equip the next generation with the tools and knowledge they need to understand and protect our world.
