Looking to expand your garden without spending more money on plants? Join UF IFAS Extension Putnam County for an informative and engaging program on plant propagation by cuttings, a simple and effective way to grow new plants at home.
Learn Plant Propagation by Cuttings with UF IFAS Extension
During this program, Horticulture Agent Julio Perez and trained Master Gardener Volunteers will guide participants through the basics of plant propagation using cuttings. This method allows gardeners to create exact copies of their favorite plants. As a result, you can preserve traits such as flower color, plant size, and growth habit. In addition, plants grown from cuttings often mature faster than those grown from seed.
First, participants will learn how plant propagation fits into vegetative reproduction. Then, the program will cover the three most common types of cuttings including stem, leaf, and root. Each method will be explained in a clear and practical way. Participants will also learn about the basic tools and materials needed for success.
Participants will build practical skills, including:
- Selecting and preparing healthy plant material
- Using clean tools and choosing the right rooting media
- Watering properly to avoid rot or plant stress
- Understanding when rooting hormones are helpful and when they are not needed
- Identifying easy-to-propagate plants such as herbs and common landscape species
- Avoiding common mistakes such as cuttings drying out, over watering, and poor timing
In addition, the program highlights plants that are easy to propagate, helping participants apply these skills right away at home. Common challenges will also be discussed so participants can improve their success and avoid frustration.
This program is designed for homeowners, residents, Master Gardener Volunteers, and anyone interested in practical gardening skills. Programs may be led or supported by Master Gardener Volunteers, providing hands-on guidance and research-based information.
By the end of the program, participants will feel confident using plant propagation by cuttings to grow new plants, share with others, and improve their landscape.
