The School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences is pleased to announce a new scholarship honoring the legacy of Dr. David A. Fox, which will support forestry and geospatial science students.
Dr. Fox, who passed away in June 2025, served the School as an adjunct lecturer and urban forestry specialist from 2015 to 2025. He earned his doctoral degree from the School in 2015, after a distinguished 30-year career in public and private forestry. Dr. Fox’s goal in returning to academia was to teach and mentor the next generation of forestry professionals. He taught many of our core undergraduate classes, including Urban Forestry, Forest Conservation and People, Florida’s Forest Communities, Natural Resource Sampling, Forest Resource Information Systems, and Dendrology and Forest Plants. Dr. Fox’s “calm, generous spirit” and his ability to “bring relevance to the classroom through real-world application left a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike,” wrote Dr. Michael Andreu, a colleague of Dr. Fox.

Many of Dr. Fox’s former students and mentees acknowledged their gratitude for the dedication he showed them. Here are some of their remarks:
“Dr. Fox was an incredible educator. I learned so much from him during my time at UF.”
“An inspirational mentor with a great sense of humor.”

“He definitely made an impact on his students, including me. He was such a kind and passionate professor.”
“I doubt he remembers me, but Dr. Fox was a great professor and taught me so much.”
“He was such an inspiration to so many students, instilling the love of the outdoors in all he taught. He will be missed by many.”
“He was genuinely passionate and loved engaging the students. I know he will be missed by so many. Prayers for the family, staff, and students who had the pleasure of having a relationship with him.”
The Dr. David A. Fox Memorial Scholarship will continue Dr. Fox’s legacy by supporting students in urban forestry and geographic information systems. To donate to the scholarship fund, please visit UFgive.to/FoxScholars.
