There are no limits to the Florida 4-H Month of Service, a social media campaign that highlights 4-H’ers serving their communities. Living the 4-H pledge of “hands to larger service”, Florida 4-H encourages 4-H’ers to evaluate their communities and their specific needs to create a service project unique to each community. Abigail P from Alachua County, one of the co-chairs for the Month of Service Subcommittee, explains, “4-H emphasizes the importance of service learning that engages youth in active methods of community service and teaches them invaluable life skills along the way.”
During the Florida 4-H Month of Service, leadership opportunities are available in every community. Joseph S. from Indian River County, the second co-chair of the subcommittee hopes for “an exponential increase in participation in community service from youth” and looks at these leadership opportunities to learn to serve and pass down that knowledge to future 4-H generations. Youth take the lead and can learn about their communities’ issues firsthand. Alongside caring adults, 4-H youth are the researchers, planners, organizers, and executers in these service projects allowing them to learn decision-making and productivity skills. Some creative ways 4-H members have engaged with their communities include hosting events supporting service, partnering with other youth communities, and educating themselves and others on local issues. These events and acts of service can be used to inspire others by sharing them on social media using the hashtag #FL4HServes.
Florida 4-H’ers are serving their communities all throughout the year, not just in April. Keep using #FL4HServes and check back next April to see the highlights!
