Water Quality Update – April 22, 2016

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection only sampled Bayou Texar this week. The Escambia County Health Department only sampled Bayou’s Texar and at Sander’s Beach at the mouth of Bayou Chico – these data all look fine.

 

RED TIDE

Red tide continues in Pinellas and Manatee counties – Pinellas has reported fish kills and human respiratory problems – all clear in the panhandle.

 

FISH KILLS for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties

No fish kills reported in April

 

HEALTH ADVISORIES

No health advisories issued this week

 

WATER TEMPERATURES

Water temperature in Texar is 70 F.

 

SALINITY

The salinity in Bayou Texar is still lower than normal. This week it was 1.8 ppt. It is typically around 15.0 ppt at this station.

 

DISSOLVED OXYGEN

DO in Texar was 7.0 mg/L – which is fine.

 

NUTRIENTS

No updates on nutrients this week. You can read about nutrients from 2015 from local waters in the 2015 Water Quality Report. Again, just let me know if you would like a copy. Roc1@ufl.edu

Ocean Hour this week – Ft. Pickens. Sign in at 8:45, clean up is from 9:00 – 10:00 AM

 

WILDLIFE MONITORING

Terrapin surveys began this week. 9 heads were spotted in Indian Bayou – no nesting reported yet.

One dead horseshoe crab was found at Ft. Pickens.

Scallop surveys will begin later this summer

Inshore lionfish surveys will begin later this summer
